Stephen Scott Smith designed a multi-media show for the Artists Repertory Theater's (ART) new space on SW Morrison to accompany their current production of "Distracted", running April 14, 2009 - May 24, 2009. The play by Lisa Loomer and directed by Allen Nause deals with the impact of media on culture and on individuals and family dynamics, including young people growing up in a multi-media culture with a cacophony of visual, aural, and sensory stimuli.

"What is the toll this constant technological bombardment takes on our mental, emotional, and spiritual lives?" – Allen Nause, Director

Mark Woolley arranged for the Directors of "Distracted" to consider having Smith create work to accompany their production. Woolley believed the themes in the play matched subthemes Smith had been exploring in his art for years.

"Stephen Scott Smith began creating “the A.R.T.D.D. project”, a site specific multi-channel video installation in the lobby of Artists Repertory Theatre, after reading the play by Loomer. Her exploration of one family’s struggle with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) in "Distracted" inspired Scott to explore a variation on the theme of sensory stimulation.

"Instead of the obvious route of making big noisy urban/suburban based sound and image pieces that explore our distractions to compliment the play, I thought 'What if I visually explore the opposite: Nature.' Using Oregon as the backdrop, I shot slow motion single take video of mountains, trees, fields and sea, along with a black and white photographic/video morphing portrait of a man surrounded by white light as examples of nature. I juxtapose the 4 landscapes and single portrait (each on separate monitors) with modern form (a minimal white box in the shape of highway guardrail) and sound (trucks, electronics, music, television)." -Stephen Scott Smith

Stephen Scott Smith is a Philadelphia native currently working in Portland, Oregon. Smith uses a broad range of media including video, photo, performance and installation to explore themes like narcissism and identity. His latest solo show, "selections from ME9," was in December at the Mark Woolley Gallery.
