Portland fashion portrait photographer, Alex Frum, curates a fascinating new show, “HEADS”, at the Mark Woolley Gallery in Portland. Opening with a public reception on Saturday, May 18, 2013 and continuing through Sunday, June 9. Woolley’s 3,400 square foot space is located on the top floor of Pioneer Place, Atrium Building at SW 5th and Morrison. The exhibition highlights selected works by 10 diverse PAINTERS and ILLUSTRATORS banded by their contemporary style and street art roots. As well as, the addition of a “heads” counterpoint of four exquisite, classical Italian marble sculptures by renowned Oregon and Carrera, Italy based SCULPTOR M.J. Anderson. As Frum has stated, the theme of the group exhibition is: “The anatomical ‘HEAD’, human or not, or any interpretation thereof.” Adding, “This is definitely NOT a portraiture show or just a bunch of headshots.” Drawing from his own photographic style and techniques (e.g. sharp angle/close up, full/off canvas framing, color/light saturation), Frum requested each artist submit works which allude to this modern aesthetic.
The front of the exhibition showcard highlights one HEAD image from each of the 10 artists created specifically for the card.
All 10 2D artists exhibit 6-8, primarily SMALL to MEDIUM format pieces. Each piece is affordably priced or priced according to the artists' usual sales. The inclusion of MJ Anderson’s classical marble sculptures, according to Frum, “...stand in stark contrast with the techniques, materials; and most importantly, the representation of the human form, to those found in the work by the contemporary artists in the show.” Referring to this unique show, Mark Woolley commented, “Having a guest curator is a rare occurrence in my gallery and I am so looking forward to experiencing this show as a ‘first time visitor’ to my own gallery and to see how each artist has responded to Alex Frum’s creative request. And, of course, seeing how our guests interact with all these different heads everywhere.”
